At Kansas City Zoo, a clever flamingo named Felipe became a legend in 2015 when he escaped his enclosure—not for freedom, but for luxury. Zookeepers arrived one morning to find him missing, only to discover him standing in the public fountain, preening his feathers like a VIP at a spa.

Graceful flamingos gather in a serene pond, showcasing their vibrant pink plumage against the gentle ripple of water.

The genius bird had:

  • Picked the lock on his gate (a skill he’d practiced in secret).

  • Strolled past visitors who assumed he was part of the exhibit.

  • Chosen the fountain specifically for its warm water—a clear upgrade from his habitat.

The staff eventually lured him back with shrimp bribes, but Felipe’s antics inspired upgrades to his enclosure (and a new "Flamingo Pool Day" event). His escapade proved animals crave comfort and choice—just like humans.

Therefore, even animals deserve ‘spa days',  supporting habitat enrichment programs is crucial for the well-being of animals in captivity.
